Emma Pauly
Emma Pauly (they/she) is a graduate of the University of Chicago (B.A. with honors and M.A.) and the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School (M.A.) with a background in theatre and performance (having worked as a freelance dramaturg and performer). Their primary focus is the queer embodiment in tragedy, with a broader interest in tragedy at large and its reception, staging, and the practicalities and complexities of contemporary performance. Emma’s M.A. thesis (“On Being ἐοικώς: Towards a Non-Binary Dionysus In and Beyond Euripides’ Bacchae ”) for the University of Chicago’s MAPH program focused on these themes, as well as their continuing interest in the intersection between divinity and the queer body in antiquity. Their translation of Homeric Hymn 7 has been published in Ancient Exchanges and an early draft of their Bacchae in the theatrical translation journal The Mercurian. This Bacchae was also performed as part of the University of Chicago’s Rhetoric and Poetics Workshop in the Winter of 2020. When not engaged in academic pursuits, Emma can typically be found playing Dungeons and Dragons, near or immersed in saltwater, or experimenting in the kitchen (though typically not all three at once).
