Many congratulations to Classics Undergraduate student Dido Wang, who has just been awarded the 2020 Peter Rotter Undergraduate Essay Award. Dido’s paper (“Descending god, ascending man: A study of the Mycenaean Gold Masks from Grave Circle A”) explores the possible purpose of the famous gold masks from Bronze-Age Mycenae. She argues that the funerary masks found in Grave Circle A, rather than being portraits, constitute part of a process of physically recreating the dead in order to help them assume a second, possibly divine identity, an idea which might have been inspired by Minoan epiphany rituals. Well done, Dido. We are very proud of you!
