Research

My current research focuses on Plato¹s late dialogues with a special emphasis on Theaetetus, Sophist and Statesman. Building on work done with David Blank on the Statesman for a Graduate Research Mentorship, I’m considering the role of axiological distinctions in the Statesman, how they are grounded in the distinction between image and original, and how this latter distinction is expressed in terms of measure. The notions of measure and commensurability seem to be a pervasive theme of the dialogue sequence Theaetetus, Sophist ,Statesman and serve, I think, to unify the three dialogues. If I’m correct, the latter two dialogues are intimately intertwined with the Sophist providing the theoretical groundwork for what we find in the Statesman. More general pursuits include pedagogy, rhetoric, Aristotle (especially the metaphysics and logical works), and a budding interest in Stoic epistemology and logic.
